James Moore
Month of Thoth, year 4, Artaxerxes the king. Then in Fort Syene, said ˁAnanî son of Ḥaggay son of Mešullam,
a Judean of the dᵉgal-unit of Nabûkudurrî, to Paḥnûm son of Besaˀ, an Aramean of Syene of that same dᵉgal-unit, saying: I came to you (m.s.)
in your house in Fort Syene, and I borrowed from you (m.s.). You (m.s.) gave to me emmer, 2 peras, 3 seahs. Therefore, I, ˁAnanî son of Ḥaggay,
shall compensate (you) and give you that emmer, (namely) e(mmer), 2 p(eras), 3 seahs from the ration which will be given to me from the treasury of the king.
And if I do not compensate (you) and give to you (m.s.) that emmer which is written above when the ration is given to me
from the house of the king, then I, ˁAnanî, shall be guilty and shall give to you silver, an abigarana-penalty: one—(namely) 1—karsh refined silver.
Afterwards, I, ˁAnanî, shall compensate (you) and give to you (m.s.) the abigarana-penalty which is written above within 20—that is twenty—days.
(There is) no lawsuit. And if I have died and have not yet compensated (you) thereby giving to you (m.s.) the silver belonging to you (m.s.) which is written above, then my children
or my guarantors shall compensate you (m.s.) with the silver which is written above. And if my children or my guarantors (shall) have not paid you (m.s.)
this silver which is written above, then you (m.s.), Paḥnûm, have right to my security to seize (it). You (m.s.) may take for yourself (m.s.) from (either)
a brick house, servant or female-servant, a vessel of bronze or iron, a garment or grain \what you can find (belonging) to me in Elephantine or Syene or in the province/ until you (m.s.) are compensated for your (m.s.) silver, which
is written (11) above. (12) (There is) no lawsuit. Wrote Šaweram son of ˀEšemram son of ˀEšemšezib this document in Fort Syene at the instruction of
ˁAnanî son of Ḥaggay son of Mešullam. The witnesses herein: witness Menaḥem son of Šallûm, witness Ḥaggay,
witness Naḥûm son of Baytaˀ, witness Ḥaggay son of Mardû.
