James Moore

On the 7th of Kislev, that is day 4 of the month of Thoth, year 9 of Artaxerxes 2the king,
said Yahôḥen daughter of Mešullak, a lady of Elephantine the fortress, to Mešullam son of
Zakkûr, a Jew of Elephantine the fortress, saying: You gave me a loan of silver,
4, that is four, (3) shekels (4) by the stone(-weight)s of the king, at its interest. It will increase upon me
(at the rate of) silver, 2 hallurs for 1 shekel for 1 month. (That) was silver, 8 hallurs
for one month. If the interest (be)come the capital, the interest shall increase like the capital,
one like one. And if a second year come and I have not paid you your silver
and its interest, which is written in this document, you Mešullam or your children have right
to take for yourself any security which you will find (belonging) to me — house of bricks, silver or gold,
bronze or iron, slave or handmaiden, barley, emmer — or any provision/collateral(?) which you will find (belonging) to me
until you have full (payment) of your silver and its interest. And I shall not be able to say to you, \saying:/ “I paid you
your silver and its interest” while this document is in your hand. And I shall not be able to complain
against you before prefect or judge, saying: “You took from me a security” while
this (13) document (14) is in your hand. And if I die and have not paid you this silver and \its/ interest
it will be my children (who) shall pay you this silver and its interest. And if
they not pay this silver and its interest, you, Mešullam, have right
to take for yourself any food or security which you will find (belonging) to them until you have full (payment)
of your silver and its interest. And they shall not be able to complain against you before prefect
or judge while this document is in your hand. Moreover, should they go into a suit, they shall not prevail
while this document is in your hand. Wrote Natan son of ˁAnanî this document
at the instruction of Yahôḥen. And the witnesses herein: (2nd hand) witness ˀOšeˁa son of Galgul;
(3rd hand) Hôdawyah son of Gedalyah; (4th hand) ˀAḥyô son of Pelaṭyah; (5th hand) ˀAgûr son of ˀAḥyô.
Document (sealing) of silver of the debt which Yahôḥen daughter of Mešullak wrote
for Mešullam son of Zakkûr.
