Textual Notes
The palimpsest is illegible, but the strokes are large, and therefore probably also Aramaic. Line 2. The letters are clearly written with a sharp pen in an elegant, but somewhat linear, hand. The letter combination -גדם- is unexpected. The fourth letter appears to be a ו since, the head of a {ד|ד} is distinctively barbed in this hand. Two stoke וs with a pen-lift such as this are common in the linear hands. Unless this is an unattested proper name, one should read -גרמ-. The Aramaic verbal √גרם is otherwise not attested in IA or earlier dialects. The denominal form is known in Hebrew meaning to “crush or gnaw bones” (HALOT “גרם”), but these occurrences may be idiosyncratic. The root is well attested in later Aramaic dialects meaning “to cause to happen” in the G-stem (CAL “grm”), and this translation is favored here.
