Textual Notes
Jar label. Script, Aramaic. Sharpened stylus. Professional hand. Text: first name of Syrian origin second name unattested. Reading: belonging to Rapaˀ son of Mˁwst.
The name Rapaˀ (or Rapha) may be found on on jar label from Elephantine, P. 11459 (TAD D.11.16 = Sachau ost. 85, 1 / taf. 72, 17).
Mˁwst is so far unattested. It is may be attested in H5--AP128 [5910] (Saqqara in Segal no. 151) ln. 3. In fact the surviving strokes of that broken name nicely matches the spelling Mˁwst.
The meaning is uncertain, but tentatively I would identify it with mwsatś known in Carian and of Lydian origin (Adiego Lajara, Carian, 386 = text E.Me [Memphis] 42.). The Greek transcription is Mousate
Reading a form of the Semitic name מעוז- seems highly unlikely, since he zayn would should have been retained. In the Aramaic transcription of Egyptian names one finds aiyn next to a consonantal "w" to indicate a vowel sound (and the associatated glottal stop), e.g. פפטעונית (Egy. PꜢj=f-ṯꜢw-ˁ.wj-Nj.t, Vittmann 102), תחותמעו (Egy. Ḏḥwtj-mꜢˁ.w, Vittmann 104). One could postulate an Egyptian name ending -.t, but Mˁws. According to Porten et al, English, 87, 190 the name Ausnahar עוסנהר is of Arabian origin, but he provides no analysis. Becking implies it means "wolf of the morning" (Identity, 76), which if correct means the first element is not a verb but a noun. Therefore מעוס, which would be a verbal/participial form, can not be of from the same naming element as עוס in Ausnahar.
It seems best to read ÄM 18432 = Lidzbarski 14 line 3 Aramaic = TAD D11.4 as מעוסת and see it as reference to a possible sybling of Rapaˀ.
